#95: Beginner's Mind

Happy April! šŸŒø

Welcome to Your Monday Moment, a weekly newsletter that helps you get centered and build momentum for the week ahead. All in 10 minutes or less.

This week, we'll consider why we should adopt a beginnerā€™s mindset and what it looks like, regardless of your skill level.

In this weekā€™s newsletter, weā€™ll cover:

  • ā˜Æļø Quote of the Week: How to be a beginner and an expert at the same time.

  • šŸ§  Tip of the Week: How to borrow almost any expertā€™s brain for your project.

  • šŸŒŽ It's All Good (News): The EPA breathes life into communities, Karachiā€™s sweetest librarian wheels knowledge to kids, and a runnerā€™s marathon spree redefines the limits of human stamina.

POLL OF THE WEEK

A BRIEF MEDITATION

Imagine watching the brink of dawn rise at the top of a serene mountain range. Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your lungs to fill completely, and exhale any tension.

With each ray of sunlight that spreads across the landscape, your mind opens wider. Your boundless potential expands.

Today is an invitation to approach every experience with wonder and without judgment.

Consider how this mindset can transform your interactions, work, and personal growth. Carry this sense of renewal and openness with you throughout the day,

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

ā

In the beginnerā€™s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expertā€™s, there are few.

Shunryu Suzuki

Beginner vs. expert.

At first glance, these two seem like they're like oil and water.

The truth is, embodying a beginner's mindset (even if youā€™re experienced) will make you exponentially more creative and effective.

Keeping a beginner's mind doesn't mean forgetting all you know. It means that, when facing a challenge, you don't rush or do what you always do. You pause and ponder. You ask questions to uncover new paths. This is your beginner's mind at work.

Only once you've given yourself proper space to think do your skills and know-how come into play. This is when your expertise shines the brightest.

Don't be fooled. A beginner's mindset won't slow you down. It elevates your approach. A still & curious mind builds and deepens mastery in ways youā€™ve never experienced.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Routines. We all have them. They're our brain's way of going on autopilot, saving us energy on day-to-day tasks. But sticking to routines can sometimes mean missing out on more efficient (and innovative!) ways of doing things.

This week:

  • Pick a task or a challenge that takes up quite a bit of time. (One that your instinct tells you there's probably a better way!)

  • Ask AI to approach the task from a different professional's perspective. If you're a project manager, seek a designer's advice. Or ask how a world-class chess player would design your next marketing strategy!

This is more than just a fun exercise, it will unlock completely different ideas you'd never considered before!

Pro tip: To avoid industry or technical jargon (for example, if you're asking for an engineer's perspective), ask AI to explain it as if youā€™re 12 years old.
